Here we are in the midst of one of the greatest seasons of celebration in the Western World. Yet there are those for whom the celebration is anything but happy. I do not mean to get everyone down, I just want people to be aware of the two different responses to Christmas.
One response is the feeling of celebration. This is what we see on all the TV shows and the internet. It is the correct celebration, at least it is the proper response. Presents being purchased; singing Christmas carols; programs at school; happy families gatherings for dinner and exchange of presents; all are just a of few other observances unique to different families.
Depression is another reality for many people. Perhaps your Christmas observance is not happy as it is supposed to be according to all the stories. There could be a death of someone which makes any holiday a remembrance of a loss. There is always the chance that memories of the season are ones of child abuse or alcohol and drug abuse. Another, perhaps more wide spread than believed, is the realization that no matter how hard you work your family is not a TV family and your celebration will not live up the model Christmas.
I believe there can be two reactions to the holiday season or even a combination of the two. Please be aware of the different responses and be sensitive to each other's observance of Christmas.
The gift of Jesus is meant to bring happiness and peace to all God's children. I pray there will come a time when it will be true.
